The History of Earth Day
Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, who wanted to channel the energy of the anti-war movement toward environmental protection. The idea came to him after witnessing the massive 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, which killed thousands of sea birds, dolphins, and sea lions. Nelson announced the idea for a 'national teach-in on the environment' and recruited Denis Hayes as the national coordinator.
The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, was an unprecedented success. Twenty million Americans — 10% of the U.S. population at the time — took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a sustainable environment. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.
Earth Day 1970 achieved rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city dwellers and farmers, business and labor leaders. By the end of that year, the first Earth Day had led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of landmark environmental laws including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. The Clean Air Act alone has saved an estimated 200,000 lives since its passage.
Earth Day went global in 1990, organized by Denis Hayes and a team of environmental leaders from 28 countries. That year, 200 million people in 141 countries participated, lifting environmental issues onto the world stage. Earth Day 1990 gave a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwide and helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Today, Earth Day is celebrated by over 1 billion people in more than 190 countries, making it the largest secular observance in the world.
Earth Day Traditions
🌳 Tree Planting
Planting trees is one of the most popular Earth Day traditions. Each year, millions of trees are planted on Earth Day around the world. The tradition began in the 1970s as a way to combat deforestation and urbanization. Some of the largest tree-planting events happen in India, where volunteers have planted over 50 million trees in a single day. Scientists estimate that planting 1 trillion trees could remove 25% of the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere — enough to make a significant impact on climate change.
♻️ Clean-Up Events
Community clean-up events are a core Earth Day tradition. Beach clean-ups are especially popular, with volunteers collecting millions of pounds of plastic waste from coastlines every year. The Great Global Cleanup, organized by Earthday.org, is the world's largest environmental volunteer event. In 2023, over 100 million people participated in clean-ups across 190 countries, removing over 20 million pounds of trash from parks, rivers, beaches, and communities.
🏫 Environmental Education
Earth Day has always been rooted in education — the first Earth Day was essentially a nationwide teach-in. Today, thousands of schools hold special Earth Day assemblies, science fairs, and environmental lessons. Many schools plant gardens, start recycling programs, or organize field trips to local nature centers. The goal is to teach the next generation about environmental stewardship and empower them to take action.
🚲 Car-Free Days
Many cities organize car-free days or bike-to-work challenges on Earth Day to reduce carbon emissions and promote alternative transportation. Paris, Berlin, and Seoul are among the cities that close major streets to cars for the day, turning them into pedestrian and bike-friendly spaces. In the U.S., over 200 cities participate in bike-to-work events on Earth Day. Transportation accounts for 27% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions — more than any other sector.
🏛️ Advocacy and Policy
Earth Day has always been as much about political action as it is about individual action. Each year, millions of people contact their elected officials to support environmental policies — from renewable energy standards to plastic bag bans to carbon pricing. Earth Day 2016 was especially significant: the landmark Paris Climate Agreement was signed on Earth Day that year by 175 countries, committing the world to limiting global warming.
🌱 Sustainable Living Challenges
Many people use Earth Day to start sustainable living challenges — going plastic-free for a week, starting a compost bin, switching to renewable energy, or eating plant-based meals. The '30-Day Eco Challenge' has become popular, encouraging people to make one small change each day that adds up to big impact. Some companies offer incentives for employees who participate, from gift cards to extra paid time off.
