About Halloween 2026

Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. The tradition was brought to America by Irish immigrants in the 19th century and has since evolved into one of the most popular holidays in the US. Today, Halloween is celebrated with costume parties, haunted houses, trick-or-treating, and pumpkin carving. It is the second-largest commercial holiday in America after Christmas.

The History of Halloween

Halloween traces its roots back 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced 'sow-in'). The Celts, who lived in what is now Ireland, the UK, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1st — the day that marked the end of summer and the harvest, and the beginning of the dark, cold winter. They believed that on the night before the new year (October 31st), the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred.

During Samhain, the Celts lit huge sacred bonfires and wore costumes, typically made of animal heads and skins, to disguise themselves from the roaming spirits. They also left food outside their doors to appease these ghosts — the earliest form of trick-or-treating. Celtic priests called Druids would gather around the bonfires to make predictions about the future, and people would try to tell each other's fortunes.

When the Romans conquered Celtic territory in 43 AD, they brought their own festivals. Feralia, a day in late October to commemorate the passing of the dead, merged with Samhain. The Roman festival of Pomona, honoring the goddess of fruit and trees, also contributed — the bobbing for apples tradition comes from Pomona's symbol, the apple.

Halloween came to America in the 1800s with Irish and Scottish immigrants. Early American Halloween involved community celebrations of the harvest, sharing ghost stories, and pranking. Trick-or-treating became widespread in the 1920s and 1930s, though it was interrupted by sugar rationing during WWII. The phrase 'trick or treat' first appeared in print in 1927 in Alberta, Canada.

Halloween Traditions Explained

🎃 Jack-o'-Lanterns

The tradition of carving pumpkins started in Ireland and Scotland — but they originally carved turnips, potatoes, and beets! The legend of 'Stingy Jack' tells of a man who tricked the Devil and was condemned to wander the earth with only a turnip lantern to light his way. Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America, where pumpkins were larger, softer, and easier to carve than turnips. Today, over 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins are grown annually in the U.S. just for Halloween.

🍬 Trick-or-Treating

Trick-or-treating evolved from several ancient traditions. During Samhain, people left food outside to appease wandering spirits. Later, in medieval England, 'souling' involved poor people going door-to-door on All Souls' Day, offering prayers for the dead in exchange for 'soul cakes.' By the 1920s, American kids were dressing up and going door-to-door for candy. The practice really took off after WWII when sugar rationing ended. Today, Americans spend over $3 billion on Halloween candy each year.

👻 Wearing Costumes

Costumes originated during Samhain when the Celts dressed up in animal skins and heads to disguise themselves from the spirits they believed were roaming the earth. The idea was that if you looked like a ghost, the real ghosts wouldn't bother you. In medieval times, people would wear costumes on All Hallows' Eve and perform for food or money — the precursor to modern trick-or-treating. Today, Halloween costumes range from scary to silly to pop-culture inspired.

🦇 Bats, Black Cats, and Spiders

These Halloween icons all come from medieval superstitions. Black cats were believed to be witches' familiars — their companions who helped them practice magic. Bats were associated with witches' brewing rituals, and spiders were thought to be evil spirits. Interestingly, the connection between bats and Halloween is actually reinforced by nature — bats are most active around Halloween time as they prepare for hibernation.

🏠 Haunted Houses

Commercial haunted houses started appearing in America in the 1970s, though the tradition of telling ghost stories around Halloween goes back centuries. The first major haunted house attraction was created by the Jaycees organization as a safe alternative to Halloween pranking, which had become destructive in many communities. Today, haunted houses are a $1 billion industry, with over 2,500 professional haunted attractions operating in the U.S. each year.

🍎 Bobbing for Apples

This game comes from the Roman festival of Pomona, honoring the goddess of fruit and trees. In early Celtic and British traditions, bobbing for apples was also a fortune-telling game. Each apple in the tub would represent a potential suitor, and whoever you bit (metaphorically!) would be the one you'd marry. The first person to bite an apple would be the first to marry, while the last person to bite would remain single.

Halloween 2026 FAQ

Why is Halloween on October 31st?
Halloween is on October 31st because it originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of summer and the beginning of the Celtic new year on November 1st. The night before — October 31st — was when the veil between the living and dead was thinnest. When Christianity spread through Celtic lands, November 1st became All Saints' Day (or All Hallows' Day), so the night before became All Hallows' Eve, which eventually shortened to Halloween.
Where did jack-o'-lanterns come from?
Jack-o'-lanterns come from the Irish legend of 'Stingy Jack,' a man who tricked the Devil and was cursed to wander the earth forever with only a hollowed turnip with a coal inside to light his way. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought the tradition to America, where they found that pumpkins — native to North America — were much easier to carve than turnips. The first known jack-o'-lantern in print appeared in an 1837 issue of Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'Twice-Told Tales.'
How did trick-or-treating start?
Trick-or-treating has several ancestors. Medieval 'souling' involved people going door-to-door offering prayers for the dead in exchange for food. 'Guising' in Scotland and Ireland involved dressing up and performing for treats. In 1920s America, community Halloween parties became popular, and kids started going door-to-door for candy. The Great Depression made pranks more common and destructive, so communities organized trick-or-treating as a safer alternative. It became nationwide after WWII when sugar rationing ended.
Why are orange and black Halloween colors?
Orange and black have been associated with Halloween for centuries, and they make perfect symbolic sense. Orange represents the harvest and autumn — the falling leaves, pumpkins, and bonfires of Samhain. Black represents death, darkness, and the supernatural — the thinning veil between worlds, the coming winter darkness, and all things spooky. Together, they perfectly capture the dual nature of Halloween: harvest celebration and ghostly superstition.
How much do Americans spend on Halloween?
Halloween is the second-largest commercial holiday in America, after Christmas. Americans spend over $10 billion annually on Halloween — about $3 billion on candy, $3.5 billion on costumes, $2.5 billion on decorations, and $1 billion on cards. It's also the third-largest party night of the year, after New Year's Eve and Super Bowl Sunday. Over 170 million Americans celebrate Halloween each year.
