About Labor Day 2026
Labor Day is observed on the first Monday of September and became a federal holiday in 1894 following the Pullman Strike. The holiday was created to recognize the social and economic achievements of American workers and the labor movement. It is traditionally seen as the unofficial end of summer, with many families enjoying barbecues, parades, and outdoor activities. Fashion tradition holds that it's the last day to wear white before Memorial Day the following year.

The History of Labor Day
Labor Day was created to honor the American labor movement and the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the United States. The holiday grew out of the labor unrest of the late 19th century, when workers — including children as young as 6 — typically worked 12-hour days, seven days a week, with no overtime, no sick leave, and no vacation. Unions began organizing strikes and rallies to protest these terrible conditions and demand better treatment.
The first Labor Day parade was held on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. About 10,000 workers marched from City Hall to Union Square, carrying signs that read 'Eight Hours for Work, Eight Hours for Rest, Eight Hours for Recreation.' The idea for a 'workingmen's holiday' spread quickly, and by 1885, Labor Day was being celebrated in many industrial centers across the country. Oregon became the first state to make it an official holiday in 1887.
The Pullman Strike of 1894 was the turning point that made Labor Day a national holiday. When workers at the Pullman Palace Car Company went on strike to protest wage cuts, it shut down rail traffic across the country. President Grover Cleveland sent federal troops to break the strike, which led to violence and 30 deaths. To smooth things over with organized labor and repair his political image, Cleveland rushed legislation through Congress making Labor Day a national holiday — just six days after the strike ended.
Today, Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September, and for most Americans, it's the unofficial end of summer — the last chance for a beach trip, a backyard barbecue, or a weekend getaway before the kids go back to school. The original meaning of honoring workers has faded somewhat, but the tradition of parades, picnics, and union celebrations continues. And that old rule about not wearing white after Labor Day? It's a 19th-century fashion etiquette rule that's largely been forgotten — though some people still follow it.
Labor Day Traditions
🚶 Labor Parades
Labor parades were the original Labor Day tradition, dating back to the very first parade in 1882. Unions would march through the streets with bands, floats, and signs demanding better working conditions. While parades aren't as common today, many cities still hold them — especially in areas with strong union presence like Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Chicago. The New York City Labor Day Parade is still the largest, drawing hundreds of thousands of union members and supporters each year.
🍖 End-of-Summer Barbecues
For most Americans, Labor Day is all about the barbecue — it's the second biggest grilling day of the year after the Fourth of July. Families fire up the grill one last time for burgers, hot dogs, ribs, and all the summer classics. It's the unofficial end of summer, the last weekend before school starts, so people try to squeeze in one more outdoor party. Many communities also have Labor Day picnics with games, music, and fireworks to close out the summer season.
🏖️ Last Beach Weekend
Labor Day weekend is the busiest beach weekend of the year — everyone heads to the shore one last time before summer officially ends. Hotels and beach houses are booked months in advance, and traffic to coastal areas is famously terrible. In many places, public beaches actually close after Labor Day weekend, or at least reduce lifeguard hours. The phrase 'last beach weekend' has become synonymous with Labor Day in American culture.
🏈 College Football Kickoff
Labor Day weekend marks the official start of the college football season — one of the most anticipated sports events of the year. The first big games of the season are always held over Labor Day weekend, drawing millions of viewers. For many fans, the Labor Day Monday night game is the highlight of the weekend. The NFL also usually plays its first games the week after Labor Day, so football season truly begins with this holiday.
🛍️ Labor Day Sales
Labor Day weekend is one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year — second only to Black Friday. Retailers offer huge sales on summer clothing, appliances, furniture, and cars as they clear out summer inventory to make room for fall merchandise. Car dealers in particular push Labor Day sales hard — it's one of their biggest selling weekends of the year. Interestingly, the tradition of Labor Day sales started in the 1920s as department stores tried to capitalize on the three-day weekend.
⚪ No White After Labor Day
The old fashion rule about not wearing white after Labor Day is one of the most famous (and most ignored) traditions. It started in the 19th century as a way for the upper class to distinguish themselves from the working class — white was considered a summer vacation color, and putting it away after Labor Day showed you were wealthy enough to have a summer wardrobe. Today, almost no one follows this rule, though some traditionalists still swear by it. Fashion magazines have been declaring it 'dead' for decades.
