About Thanksgiving 2026
Thanksgiving traces its origins to the 1621 harvest feast shared by the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people in Plymouth, Massachusetts. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it a national holiday in 1863, setting it on the final Thursday of November. In 1941, Congress officially fixed it as the fourth Thursday of November. The holiday is centered around family gatherings and a traditional feast featuring turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. It also kicks off the holiday shopping season.

The History of Thanksgiving
The story of Thanksgiving as we know it begins in 1621, when the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians shared a harvest feast in Plymouth Colony. However, this 'first Thanksgiving' was actually a three-day celebration of a successful harvest, not a religious observance. There were probably no pies or potatoes — the menu likely included venison, wild fowl, corn, and seafood.
Surprisingly, Thanksgiving didn't become a national holiday until over 200 years later. Writer Sarah Josepha Hale (author of 'Mary Had a Little Lamb') campaigned for 36 years to make Thanksgiving a national holiday, writing thousands of letters to presidents and governors. Abraham Lincoln finally proclaimed it a national holiday in 1863, during the height of the Civil War, as a way to foster unity.
The date of Thanksgiving has shifted over time. Lincoln set it on the last Thursday of November, but in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved it up a week to create a longer Christmas shopping season during the Great Depression. This proved so unpopular that Congress fixed it permanently on the fourth Thursday of November in 1941.
Today, Thanksgiving is America's most beloved family holiday. It's a day of gratitude, feasting, football, and parades — with over 46 million turkeys eaten each year, and nearly 50 million people traveling to be with family.
Thanksgiving Traditions
🦃 The Thanksgiving Turkey
Turkey wasn't necessarily on the menu at the first Thanksgiving — the Pilgrims probably ate more venison and geese. But by the 19th century, turkey had become the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving table, in part because it was large enough to feed an entire family. The annual White House turkey pardon tradition started informally with Truman and was made official by George H.W. Bush in 1989.
🏈 Thanksgiving Football
Football has been part of Thanksgiving since the 1800s. The Detroit Lions started their annual Thanksgiving Day game in 1934 as a way to draw attention to the new team. The Dallas Cowboys joined the tradition in 1966. Today, three NFL games are played every Thanksgiving, watched by over 100 million viewers total.
🎈 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade began in 1924, when Macy's employees marched from Harlem to Herald Square in costume, accompanied by floats, bands, and animals from the Central Park Zoo. The giant character balloons made their debut in 1927, with Felix the Cat being the first. Today, 3.5 million people line the streets to watch the parade in person, with another 50 million watching on TV.
🍁 Black Friday Shopping
The day after Thanksgiving has been the busiest shopping day of the year since the 2000s. The term 'Black Friday' dates back to the 1960s in Philadelphia, where police used it to describe the chaotic crowds and traffic. It became associated with retailers finally moving 'into the black' (making a profit) for the year. Today, Americans spend over $50 billion during the Black Friday weekend.
