The name 'Memorial Day' gradually replaced 'Decoration Day' in the years after World War II, becoming the official name in 1967 when Congress passed federal legislation. In 1971, Congress moved Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend — a change that remains controversial among veterans groups, who argue it has diminished the holiday's purpose of remembrance and turned it into just another summer kickoff with barbecues and sales.
